BioJaeyoun Yoo, a Korean artist, captures the ongoing story of ordinary life through modern fantasy; using cartoonish forms, her painted clay sculptures remark upon the blasé concerns of everyday people. Rather than sending a pre-constructed message, Yoo shapes her art with storytelling through visual expression, capturing the saga of the modern world through spontaneous techniques. Yoo sometimes builds clay and sometimes carves it out in order to stay true to the natural, varying characteristics of the clay itself. In her art, Yoo constructs a fantastical, recurring character named Mr. Kim, whose generosity and exaggerated features instill her work simultaneously with humor and imagination. As Kim uses fantasy to express the nature of reality, her art speaks to the people in this world who are tired of the mundane--through her art, they can encounter themselves in its extraordinary vision. Yoo received her BFA from Chungang University in ceramics, and is now an instructor at Kyungin Women’s College.
