Aside from his extensive career in music, Joseph Arthur initially had a passion in paintings. Inspired by Jean Michel Basquiat’s paintings and Graffiti art, Arthur began creating some of his own abstract pieces. With his great zeal for the creative arts, Joseph has been able to coexist and harmonize his recording studio and studio/gallery in a “symbolic relationship-each feeling, informing, and balancing the other.” As heard in his music and now seen in his paintings, Arthur is on “his quest to explore and reveal the hidden tension between chaos and beauty, his paintings are. Like his music; evocative, emotive, and replete with the natural rhythms of life.” These artworks are dense with emotions and meaning; each line is heavy and necessary to embody Joseph Arthur’s thoughts:
“… By being deeply personal I attempt to find something universal
To uncover the truth of what we are beneath the flesh and form
To commune with spirit in organic swirls and drive at the electricity expanding us all…
When I paint I am the hand of nature giving man [permission to be a flower
I follow the flower into death until it breathes new life into me and then itself again
I paint to uncover
And cover what was never there at all…”
Famous musician, Peter Gabriel states, “When he was starting fifteen years ago, I was struck by the strength and visceral quality of Jo’s paintings. They seem to connect to Expressionism, Art Brut, Basquiat and the Graffiti movement. I remember encouraging him to take the painting seriously and it has been great to watch its evolution.”
Joseph Arthur is an acclaimed musician and artist; a true artist who creates from his heart and soul. As a musician, he was first discovered for his great talents by Peter Gabriel in the mid-nineties. Since then he has released ten studio albums, most recently “The Ballad of Boogie Christ” in 2013, and eleven EPs, with several of his tracks use in television and film. Joseph Arthur, the artist, has exhibited his artwork in North America, Europe, and Asia since his debut showing at Vertigo Gallery in London, England in 2006. Some of his past exhibits include, Joseph Arthur (2012) at Fingerprints in Long Beach, CA, The Venetian Hotel’s Blue Frog (2011) in Macau, China and Joseph Arthur at We Gallery (2010) in his hometown, Akron, OH. Recently, he has performed on several talk shows, including “Late Night with David Letterman,” even creating live paintings on stage during his performances.
He set up his personal art gallery The Museum of Modern Arthur in June 2007 as a brick and mortar location in Brooklyn's DUMBO District. According to an article on Stereogum.com, Joseph and the MOMAR were evicted from the building. Joseph held a record release party for Temporary People before the closing of the gallery in September 2008. The MOMAR gallery soon morphed into an online gallery.
Though Joseph Arthur’s first passion is the visual arts, he is better known for his musical
talents after being discovered by Peter Gabriel in the mid-nineties. Since then, Arthur has
released seven full- length studio albums and eleven EPs, with music from his extensive and
critically acclaimed catalog being used in such popular television series as Dawson’s Creek,
The OC, Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, HBO’s Hung and True Blood, as well as in the films Shrek 2,
The Bourne Identity, Hell’s Kitchen and the American Pie trilogy. Coming off of the heels of touring and releasing an album alongside Ben Harper and Dhani Harrison for the side project, Fistful of Mercy, Arthur released his long-awaited solo album, ‘The Graduation Ceremony’, on May 24, 2011. In 2012, Arthur released a double album, Redemption City, and collaborated with Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament in the band, RNDM. He began using Pledge Music to fund the release of his new studio album, The Ballad of Boogie Christ in 2013,.
